Meet Jason

Hi, I’m Jason Black—a music educator, pianist, clarinetist, accompanist, and piano tuner based on Long Island, New York.

I have been playing piano for over 20 years and teaching music for more than a decade. Today, I provide private music instruction to students of all ages and experience levels throughout Long Island while also working as an accompanist for school concerts, NYSSMA Solo Festivals, All-State performances and serving as the Music Director for the Presbyterian Church of Sweet Hollow in Melville, NY.

My teaching experience includes serving as an Elementary Band Teacher in the Patchogue-Medford School District, teaching High School Band and Chorus at Providence Grove High School in Liberty, NC, and working as a Music Director for theatrical productions at the French Woods Festival of the Performing Arts in Hancock, NY.

In addition to teaching and performing, I have expanded my work into piano tuning and maintenance. As both a musician and educator, I understand the importance of a well-maintained instrument and enjoy helping pianists get the best possible performance from their pianos. My goal is to combine my experience as a teacher, performer, and tuner to provide high-quality musical services for students, performers, schools, and families throughout the Long Island area.

Why Black Magic?

Both my grandfathers passed away a few years ago. I have many fond memories of my grandparents. My grandfather, Howard was a Piano Tuner, Clarinetist and Band Teacher. I guess you could say I got my music genes from him. My other grandfather was always curious and would always ask questions. We’d have conversations for hours about being a musician and just life in general. They both taught me a lot so much that I try to instill into my own students.

Black Magic was the name my grandpa Ken’s boat when I was growing up. It was his pride and joy. He had a passion for sailing and I still remember it to this day. It almost felt like a second home to me being on the water.

As I started to branch out with teaching and performing, I wanted to give myself a name that stood out and meant something to me. My mom told me to call it “Black Magic Piano” and I couldn’t say no. It recognizes the two people that had the greatest impact on my life and honors both of their legacies and the impact that they had on my life. I hope what I do makes them proud.
